With the ENYAQ iV, ŠKODA is taking another leap into the era of electric mobility. The Czech car manufacturer’s first all-electric SUV also takes a fresh approach to lighting design, combining technically innovative full-LED matrix headlights with an emotive design language.
With the ENYAQ iV, ŠKODA is presenting its first production vehicle based on the modular electrification toolkit (MEB). Compared to previous models, how has the design of the headlights changed?
Petr Nevřela: In implementing ŠKODA’s current design language, we already consistently developed the front headlights of the SCALA and KAMIQ model series and the new generation of the OCTAVIA. In all the models we have presented over the last 18 months, the headlights are generally flatter, resulting in an even more dynamic effect. The KAMIQ also adds its own twist with daytime running lights at the top. Furthermore, additional crystalline elements have been incorporated into the headlight design. With the ENYAQ iV, we are continuing this trend and refining specific details, such as the new, finely-drawn daytime running lights with subtle lashes and the new hexagonal shape of the main LED modules. The new headlights and taillights further enhance the innovative character of the new ENYAQ iV.
How long does the development process take when designing new headlights and rear lights?
Nevřela: The development of the design is a dynamic process; we work closely with our colleagues in exterior design and with the exterior lighting development team. We discuss which ideas are feasible before making the final selection. All in all, the process can take anywhere from six to twelve months.
What inspires you when designing new headlights and taillights?
Nevřela: ŠKODA is proud to reflect the tradition of Bohemian crystal art in its vehicles and interpret it in its own way. The precise lines, geometric arrangements and the exceptionally clear glass surfaces are fascinating and, depending on the incidence of light and viewing angle, offer ever-changing facets. We can use this as a basis for experimenting with light effects, for example, with the three-dimensional rear lights that are illuminated with fine light strips.
What initial impression do the new ENYAQ iV’s headlights convey?
Nevřela: The ENYAQ iV’s lighting graphics are welcoming and friendly at first glance, while the headlights create a highly dynamic and modern look. Innovative LED technology also underlines the sustainable concept of our first all-electric SUV.
The model marks the beginning of a new era for the Czech car manufacturer, which is why the brand is also taking another step forward in design with the ENYAQ iV. Emotive lines and balanced, dynamic proportions are combined in the first ŠKODA based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electrification toolkit (MEB), which offers a generous interior and a sustainable yet fun driving experience.
The ENYAQ iV is the first ŠKODA based on the modular electrification toolkit. How has ŠKODA’s design language evolved with this vehicle?
Karl Neuhold: With the ENYAQ iV, we are again building on the emotive ŠKODA design language that characterises the SCALA, the KAMIQ and the new, fourth-generation OCTAVIA. The ENYAQ iV also features sculptural lines, clear surfaces and crystalline elements that draw inspiration from Bohemian crystal art. Its proportions, however, differ from those of our previous SUV models: the ENYAQ iV has a shorter front end and an elongated roofline. This creates a very dynamic look and transforms it into a proverbial ‘space shuttle’.
How would you summarise the design of the first ŠKODA developed as a purely electric vehicle?
Neuhold: The design of the ENYAQ iV is progressive, balanced and confident. The new proportions give it a special dynamic and a spacious interior, as well. Its large wheels and ground clearance give it the powerful presence of an SUV.
What do you consider to be the highlight of the ENYAQ iV’s design?
Neuhold: Definitely the front. We consciously emphasise the distinctive ŠKODA grille on our electric vehicles, as this is an instantly recognisable feature of the brand. On the ENYAQ iV, it is set further forward and is more upright, which enhances the powerful look. The full-LED matrix headlights and daytime running lights are particularly eye-catching, too.
What are the most significant differences in exterior design between an MEB-based electric vehicle and a model with a combustion engine?
Neuhold: The differences include the height of the vehicle and the front and rear overhangs. To save space, the batteries of the MEB are installed in the vehicle floor, which makes the body a little higher. However, the longer wheelbase makes up for this visually. The individual components of the electric drive take up less space than a conventional internal combustion engine, allowing for shorter overhangs at the front and rear. The ENYAQ iV’s body is also more elongated and extremely aerodynamic, which has a positive effect on the range. A cw value from 0.27 is impressive for an SUV of this size.
In your view, what makes the ENYAQ iV a real ŠKODA?
Neuhold: The ENYAQ iV embodies all ŠKODA’s virtues and strengths in one vehicle and is an important step towards a sustainable future for the company. It combines spaciousness, versatility and clever ideas and incorporates surprising, smart features. It is suitable for families, people with active lifestyles and long-distance driving, making it the perfect companion for every day.
The ENYAQ iV is the first ŠKODA based on the modular electrification toolkit (MEB). What changes has ŠKODA made to the interior design of this entirely new vehicle compared to a model with a combustion engine?
Norbert Weber: The ENYAQ iV benefits from the MEB platform’s long wheelbase, which – in relation to the body dimensions – offers an exceptionally spacious interior. The flat floor, which lacks the central tunnel we find in vehicles with combustion engines, also contributes to this. We have used this conceptual feature to make the interior visually even airier and to create a feeling of even more space. This can be seen, for example, on the new dashboard, which is arranged over several levels.
You are talking about a new interior design concept for the ENYAQ iV. Could you describe this in greater detail?
Weber: The new design concept of the ENYAQ iV combines spaciousness and a ‘lounge feeling’. Instead of the usual equipment lines and numerous additional options, we are offering our new Design Selections in the ENYAQ iV for the first time. These are reminiscent of modern living environments, featuring perfectly coordinating colours and materials. Additionally, we offer clearly structured option packages in various themes, with some separate options available for all models. This means we can provide customers with choices that are clear and simple yet distinctly unique.
What are the most significant changes to the interior architecture of the ENYAQ iV?
Weber: Here, the lack of a central tunnel offers numerous possibilities. At the front, we used this space for an additional storage compartment beneath the centre console, which is arranged over several levels. Thanks to the long wheelbase, rear passengers benefit from the extra space in front of the centre seat as well as the exceptionally generous legroom for the seats either side. In addition to this remarkable amount of space for passengers, the ENYAQ iV also offers a boot capacity of 585 litres.
How would you describe the interior design of the ENYAQ iV?
Weber: Clear, airy, innovative and sustainable. Clear thanks to how easy it is to configure the Design Selections and the theme packages, airy thanks to its roominess and excellent sense of space. Innovative thanks to features such as the 13-inch central screen and the new head-up display, including augmented reality, and sustainable thanks to the use of natural and recycled materials.
Which new colours and what new and sustainable materials are being used in a car for the first time?
Weber: In one Design Selection, for example, the seat covers are made of 40 per cent new wool and bear the Woolmark Company’s seal. The remaining 60 per cent of the blend is polyester from recycled PET bottles. These covers have a unique feel and ensure a pleasant seating climate. Another example is the leather, which is produced in a particularly sustainable way, using an extract from olive tree leaves instead of chemicals for tanning.
What do you consider to be the design highlights of the ENYAQ iV interior?
Weber: I particularly like the decorative trim that spans the entire width of the ENYAQ iV from the dashboard to the door panels, further enhancing the sense of space. Below the central display, it references the shape of the ŠKODA grille and also serves as a rest for the hand operating the touch screen. It is surrounded by a particularly soft material that extends throughout the interior and creates the feeling of sitting on the sofa at home.
The silhouette of the new ŠKODA ENYAQ iV gives an idea of the proportions of the brand’s new flagship. A short front section and an elongated roofline create a dynamic exterior while at the same time offering a generous amount of space typical of the brand. The new SUV has a similarly spacious interior as the ŠKODA KODIAQ, despite being shorter in length than a ŠKODA OCTAVIA.
The ENYAQ iV is available with a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, three battery sizes and five power levels. The ENYAQ iV can be charged quickly, with a maximum capacity of 125 kW. It has a range of up to 500 kilometres in the WLTP cycle, making this practical, fully battery-powered SUV the perfect companion for everyday driving.
Emotive, efficient, electrifying: the new ŠKODA ENYAQ iV marks a pioneering step forward in the Czech carmaker’s electromobility strategy. The first ŠKODA production model based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric car platform combines brand-typical virtues such as a generous amount of space and an emotive design with fun yet sustainable driving. There is a choice of three battery sizes and five power variants, depending on requirements. The all-electric SUV is set to be built at ŠKODA’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav, making it the first MEB-based Volkswagen Group vehicle in Europe to be produced outside Germany.
The new ENYAQ iV is a typical ŠKODA, but with a completely new drive concept. The Czech manufacturer’s first production model based on the MEB modular electric car platform is also ideally suited for long-distance journeys as it boasts long ranges of up to 500* km in the WLTP cycle and fast charging. Due to the vehicle’s concept, the designers were able to arrange the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV’s interior in a completely new manner. This results in even more space for passengers and their luggage despite the car’s compact dimensions, whilst also presenting a look that is as emotive as it is modern. In addition, the ENYAQ iV offers state-of-the-art connectivity as well as infotainment solutions and ŠKODA-typical Simply Clever features.
The Czech carmaker’s first electrified SUV is 4,648 mm long, 1,877 mm wide and has a height of 1,618 mm; it has a wheelbase of 2,765 mm and a boot capacity of 585 l. The loading sill, which is set low for an SUV, enables effortless loading, even of heavy or bulky items.
The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV will be the first MEB-based Group vehicle in Europe to roll off the production line outside of Germany. It is set to be built at ŠKODA’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav sharing a line with models that are based on the MQB platform.
The vehicle’s world premiere will also mark the start of advance sales; serial production of the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV will start at the end of 2020. Its market launch is scheduled to take place at the beginning of 2021. A ‘Founder’s Edition’ equipped with special features and a different look will be limited to 1,895 units, commemorating the founding of the company 125 years ago.
In the entry-level versions, a rear motor drives the rear wheels, thus building a technical bridge to the history of the car manufacturer. The more powerful versions feature a second electric motor at the front to transmit torque to the road even more efficiently. In its most powerful variant, the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV can even tow loads of up to 1,200 kg if required. A total of five different power variants and three battery sizes provide fun yet sustainable driving. Depending on the version chosen, either the rear wheels or all four wheels are driven. Thanks to highly efficient batteries, the low rolling resistance tyres (5.9 per mille) and aerodynamics that are outstanding for an SUV (cd starting from 0.27), the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV can cover ranges of up to 500* km in the WLTP cycle.
The entry-level model is the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV 50; its lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of 55 kWh (net: 52 kWh). The rear-mounted electric motor has an output of 109 kW, offering a maximum range of up to 340* km. This increases up to 390* km in the 132-kW ENYAQ iV 60 fitted with a 62-kWh battery (net: 58 kWh). The rear-wheel-drive ENYAQ iV 80 delivering 150 kW has the highest range of up to 500* km in the WLTP cycle. Its 82-kWh battery (net: 77 kWh) is also used by the two versions equipped with a second electric motor and thus all-wheel drive: the 80X and the vRS, which deliver 195 kW and 225 kW respectively. The top-of-the-range model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h. The maximum range of both all-wheel-drive variants is up to 460* km.
The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV can be charged in three different ways. In addition to the conventional 230-volt household plug socket with an AC output of 2.3 kW, the vehicle can also be conveniently topped up overnight at home using a wall box delivering up to 11 kW. This takes six to eight hours depending on the size of the battery. DC fast-charging stations with a charging output of 125 kW are the third option. These can recharge the ENYAQ iV’s battery from 10% to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes*.
A highlight of the new ŠKODA ENYAQ iV is its innovatively designed interior, which conveys an all-new feeling of spaciousness. The vehicle also offers state-of-the-art connectivity and infotainment solutions: The driver is shown all of the relevant information via a free-standing, 13-inch central display and, if desired, a head-up display with augmented reality. A permanent Internet connection ensures that all information is always up-to-date. With its generous amount of space, which exudes a lounge-like character, and a 585-litre boot, the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV is ideal for families and lifestyle-oriented customers looking for an electric vehicle that is both sustainable and fully suitable for everyday use. With the introduction of the ENYAQ iV, ŠKODA is also introducing a new concept for the interior: sustainable materials such as olive leather are used for the first time in a production car. Customers can also opt for other designs to suit their preferences.

The name of the new ŠKODA ENYAQ is derived from the Irish name ‘enya’, meaning ‘source of life’. Enya itself comes from the Irish Gaelic word ‘Eithne’, meaning ‘essence’, ‘spirit’ or ‘principle’. These different meanings allow different perspectives on the name of ŠKODA’s new SUV. The ‘source of life’ symbolises the car manufacturer’s entry into the new era of electromobility and is in line with the ŠKODA brand claim ‘Driven by inventiveness – clever ideas since 1895’. It represents a new beginning, which goes hand in hand with the temperament of the ŠKODA ENYAQ and the ŠKODA engineers’ passion and innovative strength for the new electric SUV. ‘Enya’ is authentic, full of character and lively, easy to pronounce and remember and fits perfectly with the dawn of a new era in the company’s 125-year history.
ENYAQ follows ŠKODA’s well-known SUV nomenclature
Like the names of ŠKODA’s successful SUV models KODIAQ, KAROQ and KAMIQ, which are derived from the language of the Inuit people living in northern Canada and Greenland, ŠKODA combines the future all-electric vehicles based on the MEB with the Irish language in a legendary northern region. The ‘E’ at the beginning of the name stands for electromobility; the ‘Q’ at the end creates a clear connection to the virtues of an SUV.
The ŠKODA ENYAQ is the Czech brand’s first series-production vehicle based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) and the next of the series of more than ten electric models that will be launched under the ŠKODA iV sub-brand by the end of 2022. By 2025, ŠKODA expects all-electric vehicles and models with plug-in hybrid drives to account for 25% of sales.
