The Škoda 420 Popular model literally became a legend in the second half of the nineteen thirties. This small vehicle, weighing only 650 kg, could develop a speed of 80 km/h and had a fuel consumption of 7,5 litres of petrol per 100 km.
The price was also sensational; 17 800 CZK for a roadster and one thousand more for the four-seater cabriolet. In 1934 four Populars completed a four-month trip to India, the most famous Czech football goalkeeper of that time, František Plánička, travelled with them and the Populars also reliably served as utility vehicles ; ambulances or delivery vans.
The success of the modified roadster at the famous Monte Carlo Rally in 1936 led the factory to manufacture a series of 70 Škoda Popular Sport – Monte Carlo sporting specials.
