MOMS (AND DADS)
KNOW BEST
Constantly in a rush? Indeed, stress is the name of the game for so many parents these days. But here's the good news: we've collected a few useful tips from moms (and a dad or two) that could turn your hectic days into easy and productive ones. Saving precious time and making good use of some fairly simple measures just might result in less morning stress and smoother, more pleasant car rides. All that time spent together in the family car driving to school and afternoon activities is too valuable to be lost forever, so let’s make it count. Just never forget to be creative!
Research, arrange and ... action!

I used to hate the kids' activity time. Driving them around at crazy hours and waiting for their practice to end made my days a living nightmare. After you see one karate practice, it's enough, right? I was wasting tons of time, especially when I was vegging out in my car thinking about all the things I could have been doing at home in the meantime. But in the new school year, when the boys’ interests changed, I took some time and researched providers of sports activities. I found a place where they could both swim and play basketball. But the real clincher was the fact that the sports hall was close to my favourite jogging route and a very short drive from the shopping mall. Suddenly, I was able to quickly take care of the groceries (with a bit of shoe shopping on the side), but most importantly, I started fulfilling a promise to myself to take some time only for me without sacrificing family time. Can't beat that!

Katarina, 40, mother of two sporty boys

The game of silence

I love listening to my kids' chatter on our way to school and daycare. But with three of them in the backseat, it can turn into a loud quarrel way too quickly. And I desperately need some quiet time after the morning hysteria. So my wife and I have a few quick fixes up our sleeve. Incredibly, playing the ‘quiet game’ works miracles. The children's competitiveness is a real blessing sometimes!

Peter, 32, father of three happily loud kids

Prep-up, wrap-up

Crazy mornings used to lead to a crazy day at work. Time definitely wasn’t on my side. Then I remembered that as a child I had to prepare my clothes every evening for the next day, and I decided to do a trial run of this method. Before bedtime, I annoyed my kids with the same chore and made my frustrated husband set the table for breakfast, just after clearing all the dirty dishes from supper. I, on the other hand, chose my lipstick for the next day, hoping we had saved enough time for me to actually put on my make-up at home, as opposed to applying it while waiting in traffic. Well, although we spent some time on preparations, we still managed to have our usual evening cuddle. And what a difference that next morning made! No shouting, no crying, and yes, my make-up was on before we headed for the car. Obviously, we've been doing the routine ever since!

Ana, 35, mother of two dreamy kids

Expect the best, prepare for the worst

Everything always seemed fine, until we locked the door and made our way to the garage. Being a mom in a business suit, snow, sand and puddles were my biggest enemies, and, sadly, the biggest joy for my mud-loving boys. The notion of dirty shoes didn’t worry them at all. However, a well-known fact to me was that dirt from their shoes all too often ended up on my clothes. Lifting them in and out of the car and buckling them up was always a disaster just waiting to happen. So after a few embarrassments at work I now simply have a few spare clothes and shoes in my trunk for myself and the kids. I’m not nagging them all the time and I have a back-up plan, just-in-case.

Veronika, 37, mother of two messy boys

Early bird time-saver

One day, when I had to leave for work earlier than usual, I realized that the school parking lot hadn’t filled up yet and that the rush hour traffic wasn’t very heavy. Thinking about it, I figured out that I could probably save up to half an hour if I left for work earlier. My son was an early riser anyway, and I always felt a bit guilty for spending so much time parking in front of the school and wasting time in traffic, not having as much time for our afternoon forest adventures. That day, I asked my boss if I could come in and leave early every day and she was perfectly fine with it. Actually, our clients even appreciated our expanded working time. It turned out to be a total win-win situation.

Barbara, 29, busy mother of an adventurous boy

HEY,
WHERE'S MY CAR?
Some people have time for a routine Sunday carwash and cleaning, others just don't. Can you really remember the last time your car was spotless, even if you try hard? Although top search-engine hits on advice for a clean car are usually linked to an absence of children, it might not be an option for you. So if your lovely car is usually covered in a pile of breadcrumbs, toys and bags with juice, coffee, and god-knows-what-else being spilled in it every day, stinking to high heaven, our quick cleaning and up-keep tricks might just save you from totally losing it.

Tiny suckers
Vacuuming your car might be only a distant dream. But there is so much small, disgusting stuff covering car seats – bread crumbs, hair and other unidentified dust. Take powerful, wide adhesive tape (you should always have some in the car, anyway) and simply stick it on the problematic areas. Most of the small stuff will come off with the tape when you unstick it and you won't have to fear sitting in your seat dressed in black clothes.
Resin nightmare
Great escapes to the forest might bring you some peace of mind. But kids don't pick up only branches, stones, mud and ticks. They might also bring some tree sap on their backside. Address the problem with toothpaste and it will magically disappear after wiping it off with a wet cloth.
Sticky suckers
Kids love stickers, right? But you hate them on your car windows. Simply use a kitchen scraper for glass-ceramic cooktops.
Stuck to the seat
Did you just want to get out of the car seat when something wouldn't let go of you? Surely it's your son's gum. Use a bag of ice to harden the gum and it shouldn't be a problem removing it entirely – from the seat and your backside.
DDD – dry dirt demolisher
Look around: is there ice cream on the insides of the door and an unrecognizable, dried substance on your dashboard plastic? Take a pencil eraser and simply rub it off.
Stinky-greasy
Grease can have a really bad odor, so it's smart to address the grease issue at once. Who would want to smell stale mayonnaise for weeks to come? If you don't have a degreaser, use a few drops of extra powerful dish soap, rub it in the fabric, leave it for a bit and wipe it off with a wet cloth. The grease is neutralized and the smell is gone. Similarly, all other stains, including from vomit, are cleaned fairly easily with a mix of vinegar, baking soda and water.
Art, get out of the car
Crayons are great, all parents probably agree, but exclusively on paper. Don't you hate waxy stuff on your car's upholstery? Cover the “fabric art” with paper and iron it. The wax will melt and the paper will suck most of it in. On top of that, use some degreaser and wipe it off your seat.

GAME ON
Keep your children busy – and happy! Mind games are an excellent way to train the little brain! Children will improve their memory and concentration skills while having fun at the same time. Such games are the best cure for travel sickness and boredom. Don't miss out on spending quality time with your family, which is priceless. Here are six fun, gadget-free games to play with your kids in the car!

Musical carousel

One person hums the tune of a song or a melody from a fairytale, TV series or commercial and the others have to guess what the song is and where it’s from. If you want to stretch out the game, everyone can sing the song once it’s been guessed. For younger kids, hum the melody of a simple children’s song, for older ones, pick a harder tune or hum just a few tones of their beloved song.

Mindreading

Someone thinks of a thing and the others ask questions to find out what it is. Younger players should think of something that they see around them; for example, a cloud, tree, house, car, seat or bag. Older kids could pick anything they know but don’t necessarily see; for instance, a waterslide, dog, closet, or swimming pool.

Imagination masters

One of the players starts a story with a single sentence. The other players then add other sentences one-by-one. That way you can continue the game until you’re really happy with the entire storyline. Older kids and the adults playing the game should make sure that their sentences add a new dimension to the story. The younger kids should be helped along a bit with their sentences. Instead of just expecting their contribution, try asking them a question to encourage a logical response or help them by starting a sentence and letting them finish.

Rhyme all the time

Make up your own travel anthem! The first player says a word or phrase and the next player must find an appropriate rhyme. With younger kids, you could come up with rhymes for basic words and keep the game going until someone can’t think of another rhyme. With older ones, however, make it a bit complicated. They are truly capable of composing a rhymed poem if they try and are appropriately stimulated.

One, two, three…

All players count the cars you see that are the same make and model as your own. You might even spot one that’s the exact same color! One way to build on the game, especially with young kids, is to find a car on the road that is bigger, smaller, longer, shorter, lighter, or darker than yours! Older children will love counting and observing different brands and types of cars.

Experts

Pick a theme, such as fruit, cartoons, or animals. If it’s fruit, one person might say ‘banana’, the second ‘apple’, the third ‘pineapple’ and so on. When a player has run out of ideas, you could say they’re out, or choose another theme. Take it easy on the younger players by letting them get a couple of guesses wrong before they’re kicked out of the game or choose a theme they know well: for example, types of clothes you wear. For older children, you might even succeed with conceptual themes like emotions.

Memorize this!

The first player begins with the letter A and has to say a word that starts with that letter, for example, apple. The second to go says a word that starts with B, like banana. In this way the players go through all the letters of the alphabet, while repeating all of the words that have already been said. The winner is the player who goes the longest. Or don’t even compete and just have fun! To make it more challenging for older kids, you could mix up the letters and not follow the order of the alphabet, while younger childen will be perfectly happy with finding words that start with a certain letter or syllable.

Stoneface

Choose a player who has to keep a straight face for the whole game. The others then have to come up with a silly answer for him to use when he responds to their questions. For instance, if we ask an older child who his best friend is, he might have to answer “The neighbor’s cow.” As soon as the Stoneface cracks a smile or starts laughing, it’s another player’s turn. With younger Stoneface kids, you could just make faces or tickle them a bit. Laughter is guaranteed!

Verbal pantomime

Someone mouths a word without actually saying it out loud and the other players guess the word. The adults should pick more expressive words, such as mama, telephone, banana, and table, especially if they’re playing with younger children, while older ones should be able to make out the correct words even if they’re complicated.

Word chains

One player says a word and the next player must think of a word that starts with the last letter of the first word: for example, giraffe-elevator-road. You could say that all of the words must be from one common theme, like animals, trees or types of food. Older kids could use car brands, countries of the world or cities and smaller children could just find an object, animal or something else that is similar to the picked word: for example, cat-lion-leopard.
